What counts as the "West End"?

What do all those services mean?

WHAT WE DO & HOW WE DO IT

EdgeWest is comprehensive health care for youth in Toronto's West End. What does that mean?

EdgeWest Provides...

WHAT WE DO

Primary Care

Mental Health Support

Legal Aid

which means...

You can come and see us for whatever you'd see a doctor for, but we're cooler than most other doctors; we're youth-focused, and non-judgmental. Sexual health info, STI testing, pregnancy options, flu shots, sprained ankles, whatever.

We offer counseling and support through our partnership with Loft Community Services. Whatever you need to talk about, we're here to talk about it with you.

We have Legal Aid Ontario on-site to provide any assistance navigating the legal system you might need.

Employment Services

which means...

We can help you find work in partnership with St. Stephens Community House Employment Services.

At EdgeWest, we know that healthcare isn't always what it could be, especially for young people. That's why we've got a few guiding principles that inform the type of care that you'll get here.

When you come here, you get care that is...

Non-Judgmental

which means...

We aren't here to judge, we're here to help. Whatever your situation, whatever you're up to, we'll give you the best information and care so you can be a happier, healthier you.

Confidential

which means...

What you say to us stays with us. Unless legally obligated to do so, we don't give any information about you to anyone else.

EdgeWest was designed with youth in mind, is guided by input from our Youth Advisory Committee, and all the folks that work here respect the ability of youth to be able to make their own decisions, as well as their right to non-judgmental care.

Youth Informed & Youth-Positive

HOW WE DO IT

Sex-positive

LGBTQ Positive

Harm Reductive

which means...

which means...

which means...

Sex is an important part of life, and you deserve to receive good information about it, not scare-mongering. We give you the information you need to make informed decisions about your life, and that includes your sex life, whatever it looks like.

No matter your sexual or gender identity, at EdgeWest you will be treated respectfully and have that identity fully acknowledged. From our intake forms to our bathrooms, we take care to make sure that EdgeWest makes everyone feel welcome and accepted.

Use drugs? Fear of disclosing that can make some people avoid healthcare. We operate from the approach that harm reduction rather than hardline abstinence-based ideology benefits people that use drugs, their families and the community.

Anti-Racism/

Anti-Oppression

which means...

We recognize and celebrate the diversity of Toronto's communities, and are committed not only to treating everyone with respect and dignity, but also to lessening the impact of the systemic barriers many people face due to identity-based inequities.

Accessible

which means...

Every decision that we make will be through lens of ensuring that we are providing programming and services that reduce barriers to access.

Short

History

of

EdgeWest was created in partnership between Planned Parenthood Toronto and Davenport Perth Neighbourhood and Community Health Centre to serve the youth of Toronto's West End.

Both agencies did needs assessments and determined that youth in this part of the city weren't getting access to the care they needed, and so they teamed up to do something about it.

A short time, later, EdgeWest emerged, guided from the start by a Youth Advisory Committee ensuring that the decisions made are always the decisions that are best for the young people that EdgeWest serves.

EdgeWest was built for youth and designed with youth, and has youth-positive, sex-positive, anti-oppressive values at its core. Welcome to the cutting edge of healthcare for youth in Toronto's west end.
